Actually, Jake, the points you make are exactly what makes this a great deal, going beyond the excellent but limited JCPOA that Trump ripped up. It's high time that the US adopted a reasonable stance to the reality of the multipolar world we now live in. Iran is a major regional force and needs to be respected. It has taught us a lesson and I hope that Democrats and Republicans both, including you, learn this lesson. Also, it represents a critical break with Israel - one I hope we can maintain, for our own security and for that of the world. Perhaps this is the underlying reason for your hostility towards it.

In what way is this response bigoted?

Shad williams's avatar

Wow. The mask comes off. What incredible arrogance. You obviously think we are stupid. Your substack reads as though it was written by the Israel Lobby. As a US representative when will you advocate for us and your country, the United States? Is the US your country? How many US, Iranian, Palestinian lives must be risked because of your inhumane suggestions? The people of the US and the world are tired of this sort of ignorant warmongering leadership from the democrats and republicans. You should resign and save us the effort of unseating you.

K Salty's avatar

*you're - also - why? you seemed to have a similar stance in your own comment. While we are on that subject, Ted, irregardless is not a word.

Shad williams's avatar

Your comment reveals who is the idiot.

Please just end this war. We are exhausted from being at war constantly.

K Salty's avatar

He can't - he's funded by Israel.

As per usual you completely gloss over Netanyahu and Israel's role in this absolute debacle. It started with BeBe in the SITUATION ROOM and no ceasefire will ever hold with the relentless bombing of Lebanon.

You are beholden to your donors and could never solve this problem because of your devotion to AIPAC and Israel at the expense of your constituents and country.

Do your job. Take a stand. Denounce Israel and sanction all funding and arms sales to that terrorist, imperialist nation. Stop treating us like idiots, Jake.

Vote Jason Poulos if you want better leadership. https://poulos.house/

Pay attention to the $300 billion. Just guessing, but perhaps some of the funds will find their way into the pockets of the Kushner, Witkoff, Bessent, Lutnick, and Trump accounts.

K Salty's avatar

All of our tax dollars flow back to those and Auchincloss and his band of merry centrists via AIPAC.

This is abject surrender.

What is the alternative?

K Salty's avatar

Cutting off Israel would be a step in the right direction.

(Spit take!) You expect an elected politician to do more than criticize their opposition??

Jake-- The country needs it's leaders, irregardless of party aand potential damge to their careers, to step up and confront the administration. They went initiated an undeclared war at the cost of 13 military lives (that we know about), a lot of $ and alot of destruction yet revealed. Then they say good idea, not great idea. They, Trump, Hegseth should be impeached! You , Moulton, Mnachin, and any other American who cares more about their counrty than apppeasing donors HAVE to STEP UP and NOW!

K Salty's avatar

Jake only serves his donors.

Congressman Auchincloss, the wisest thing you can do with this MOU situation is to let the Republican Party politicians own this problem; As the wise and shrewd Sun Tzu has written in his classic and timeless work, The art of War, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

Unbelievable if anyone thinks Iran can be trusted to follow this or any agreement! I don't care how good it is for the IRG, they will do whatever it takes to make this MOU a thorn in in our side!

ROBERT JAMPOL's avatar

I don’t like the war, but remember that previous presidents rejected Netanyahu’s pitch- regime change and the end of a nuclear program through joint military action- as unattainable. Trump made it his war as well, and representative Auchincloss has summed up with clarity the disastrous outcome: a status quo worse than previously. As Ambassador Bolton observed, no one held a gun to Trump’s head. He thought the whole thing was a slam dunk.

As for Israel’s war, it also is failing utterly in preventing incursions by Hezbollah, and even occupying the entirety of Lebanon will not bring peace. Drones and missiles fly much farther than a ten-mile zone. Political negotiation, hard as it may be, is the only path to regional peace. Military action and assassination campaigns won’t do it, as history has proven.

K Salty's avatar

But Jake skips Israel because he wouldn't have a seat in Congress without them.

Christine Heinrichs's avatar

Thank you for your analysis of this initial agreement, Jake. The Senate must be involved in this crucial foreign policy step. Holding off an agreement until 2028 may be the best path until more capable leaders can prevail.

Raymond D Hunt's avatar

What part of this deal is worse than the JCPOA, that Iran never complied with, and received literally PALLETS of cash from President Obama, which freed themfrom the Nuclear restrictions after 10 years...GUARANTEEING that they would make a Bomb. Stop being an Anti-Trump Partisan Hack. Can see the Speck in the eye of another through the Beam in your own eye?

You're joking right?

They are all peas in the Israel pod.

How many of those billions we are giving to Iran will end up in Trump's bank accounts?
